The Black Mass — The Outsider by H P Lovecraft

Today at 11am and 7pm Pacif­ic Time (19:00 and 03:00 UK time), please join us for the lat­est in our con­tin­u­ing series of chill­ing land­mark radio dra­mas by some of lit­er­a­ture’s most famous authors.

The Black Mass was pro­duced by Erik Bauers­feld and John Whit­ing at KPFA in Berke­ley, Cal­i­for­nia between 1963 and 1970, and is pre­sent­ed by kind per­mis­sion of Erik Bauers­feld and Bay Area Radio Dra­ma.

He grew up in an under­ground cas­tle among the remains of his moth­er’s half eat­en bones. Lat­er he finds a way to climb up to the sur­face of the world and face an image of him­self… a mon­strous hor­ror that had come before its time. Love­craft adds that the sto­ry has a “cyn­i­cism tem­pered with immea­sur­able pity for man’s eter­nal tragedy of aspi­ra­tions beyond the pos­si­bil­i­ty of ful­fill­ment.”

In con­junc­tion with the broad­cast, for lis­ten­ers who are res­i­dent of Sec­ond Life, there will be an in-world lis­ten­ing par­ty for the 7pm Pacif­ic per­for­mance, at the Buck­et of Blood Pub­lic House in New Bab­bage:
