Main: A Classical Touch

Today’s programme focuses on the “light orchestral” or “light classical” end of the Light Music spectrum — plus a dash of seasonal tunes to introduce the holiday season.

The Light Programme

This month in The Light Programme we’re featuring a collection of music that reaches back to the British dance bands and bandstands of the 1920s and 1930s, wartime film music and much more.

Folk By Arrangement

The theme today is (mainly) orchestral arrangements of British folk tunes. You’ll hear some old favourites like Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite, pieces by Holst and the Fantasia on English Sea Songs, but also less well-known pieces like Philip Lane’s suite of Cotswold Dances and the delightful arrangements of Playford tunes by Ernest Tomlinson. Plus some engaging light classical pieces.
