The Great War

Oné hundred years ago, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year 1918, the armistice between the Allies of World War I and Germany ceased hostilities on the Western Front of The Great War.

November 11 became a national holiday in several countries including France, Belgium, the British Commonwealth and the United States of America. We now know The Great War as World War I, and the US changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day after World War II. The British Commonwealth nations know this holiday as Remembrance Day.

In honor of this day that we still celebrate 100 years after it occurred, our program on Radio Riel’s Main Stream consists of popular music from The Great War Era, military marches, poems of The Great War and audio clips from the war, as well as those of memories of those who served.

Today’s program is presented by Gabrielle Riel. If you are in the United States, please click here to launch the Stream Licensing player. To listen from outside of the United States, click here to start your player .
