The Black Mass - coming soon to Radio Riel

We are very pleased to announce that, beginning in the near future, Radio Riel’s Main Stream will be presenting a season of exceptional radio dramas, consisting of a series of dark tales by masters of the craft, in The Black Mass.

Featuring dramatisations of short stories by writers including Dostoevsky and Gogol as well as more characteristically chilling authors such as Bram Stoker, Edgar Allen Poe and H P Lovecraft, The Black Mass is a series of 30 ground-breaking radio dramas, created in the 1960s at the world’s first subscriber-funded radio station, Pacifica station KPFA in Berkeley, CA, by Erik Bauersfeld, John Whiting and their associates. We are honoured to be able to present this series thanks to support from Erik Bauersfeld and the Bay Area Radio Drama project, with audio materials from John Whiting, who performed a great deal of the original audio production.

To be played every Wednesday in two time slots — 11am and 7pm Pacific time, 19:00 and 03:00 GMT — to suit both US and European listeners, this series of ground-breaking dramas is presented (as far as possible, subject to source material) in its original form, with a presenter (Erik Bauersfeld himself, who also plays several of the central parts) eerily inviting you to join the “Circle of Empathy” to experience the story. While many of the episodes consist of a single tale, others include a collection of shorter stories. All create a thoroughly dark atmosphere and enveloping atmosphere that draws you into the tale, accentuated by music and effects, and all are masterfully realised.

We’ll be announcing the start date for the series shortly. Keep your eyes — and ears — open for The Black Mass.
