New Year Waltzing in Vienna

Das Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker – the annual New Year concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic in the Great Hall of the Wiener Musikverlein – is a tradition that goes back to 1939. Today it’s heard all over the world by something like a billion people.

Radio Riel’s subscription to Eurovision isn’t paid up yet, so we are broadcasting our own programme across the New Year boundary with a distinctly Viennese New Year flavour. However, while the central feature of the programme is the waltzes of Johann Strauss Jr, we also extend some way beyond that with a mixture of classical and light classical pieces, often with a waltz theme, from artists like the Brassworks Band and Bare Necessities, and composers as diverse as Chopin, Karl Jenkins and Richard Addinsell.

Today’s programme is presented by Elrik Merlin. If you are in the United States or Canada, please click here to launch the Stream Licensing player. To listen from outside North America, click here to start your player .

This programme is also available in enhanced-quality AAC. Tune in here:
