Monday Night World Music — Eid Mubarak! Sufi styles

This past weekend marked the Muslim festival of Eid ul-Fitr, the end of the holy month of Ramadan and a joyful day of feasts and prayer. In honor of Eid, tonight’s Monday Night World Music will feature music inspired by Sufi traditions, a mystical and musical strain of Islam.

Focusing on music from North India and Pakistan, we will hear traditional qawwalis — mystical, poetic, and energetic love songs — such as the music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and others. We will also hear some exemplars of Bollywood’s take on the qawwali form, both in traditional style and modern versions sometimes called “techno qawwali” or “disco qawwali.” And, we will hear some pop music after the sufi tradition, such as the energetic and beautiful songs of Kailash Kher.

Come hang out with Carter and enjoy the spiritual sounds tonight from 6–8:30PM SLT. You can join Carter in world at Madhu’s Café Indien, or listen in on Radio Riel’s main stream. Hope to see you there!
