Mardi Gras Week on Radio Riel

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

This week sees Mardi Gras (“Fat Tuesday”) events around the world, and Caledon is no exception, with parties scheduled from noon-3pm and 6–9pm SLT/PST on the day itself at Caledon Library, Wellsian Branch (see separate entry to follow).

Meanwhile in From the Library around Mardi Gras, we are playing the music of Mardi Gras on the air, with an emphasis on New Orleans. Mardi Gras falls exactly 46 days before Easter, which as many will have noticed, comes early this year. “Carnival” is the name for the period which runs from Twelfth Night (January 6) and ends on Mardi Gras.

You can read about the terminology of Carnival and Mardi Gras in this article from Mobile Bay, and about Mardi Gras around the world in this Wikipedia article.

From the Library is produced by Radio Riel in conjunction with the Caledon Library in Second Life; this week’s programmes feature music from the Radio Riel Music Library, presented by Gabrielle Riel and Elrik Merlin.

For more information on the Caledon Library, current exhibits and the work of Second Life reference libraries in general, please visit the Caledon Library Web site, or one of their locations in-world.
