Main: The Great American Songbook

Today’s pro­gram on Radio Riel’s Main stream is a col­lec­tion of com­posers and songs that are often referred to as “The Great Amer­i­can Song­book”.

There actu­al­ly is no defin­i­tive Great Amer­i­can Song­book, instead it is a term used to describe what music his­to­ri­ans, crit­ics and per­form­ers con­sid­er to be the best Amer­i­can songs of the 20th Cen­tu­ry. Many of the songs were orig­i­nal­ly writ­ten for Broad­way musi­cals, and in some cas­es films, by well-known com­posers such as George Gersh­win, Irv­ing Berlin, Cole Porter and Richard Rodgers.

The songs out­lived their ini­tial pur­pose as pieces for musi­cals when mid-20th Cen­tu­ry Jazz musi­cians began per­form­ing and record­ing them, lead­ing to their extend­ed life as Jazz stan­dards. The pro­gram today con­tains all of the “usu­al sus­pects”, as well as some of the less­er-known com­posers that con­tributed an occa­sion­al piece to the Song­book.
