On the anniver­sary of the sign­ing of the Great Char­ter (Magna Carter), today’s dai­ly pro­gramme pro­vides a selec­tion of ear­ly music from the medi­ae­val era.

The Magna Car­ta was an ear­ly step in the for­ma­tion of not only the UK’s cur­rent Con­sti­tu­tion­al Monar­chy but for democ­ra­cy in all its vari­a­tions through­out the Eng­lish speak­ing world. It set lim­its on the King’s pow­ers and that his rule was not an arbi­trary one. While near­ly all of the claus­es have been replaced or updat­ed by more mod­ern laws, Clause 29, the right of Due Process, is still in force today.
