Keyboard Classics

in Daily Programme, Radio Riel Main, The Black Mass

by Elrik Merlin on Wednesday, 20 June, 2012

Today on Radio Riel’s Main Stream we present a wealth of keyboard pieces — primarily on piano and harpsichord, but you’ll hear some other traditional keyboard instruments too — both solo and with other musical forces backing them.

The main spread of the programme encompasses the Baroque and Classical periods, but you’ll also hear some more modern pieces including treatments of classical pieces, and some engaging little 19th century pieces that are less well‐known. Most of the time, there is a classical or baroque link in there somewhere, even if it’s not immediately obvious.

The Black Mass

Then tune in at 11am or 7pm Pacific time (19:00 or 03:00 in the UK) for another chilling radio drama from Erik Bauersfeld, courtesy of Bay Area Radio Drama, in the landmark series produced 50 years ago at KPFA in Berkeley. Today it’s Erik Bauersfeld’s quite remarkable virtually solo realisation of Diary of a Madman by Nicolai Gogol, in which a madman saves himself from the mad world by becoming the King of Spain. But the castle is an insane asylum. He escapes in a flying horse carriage back to his mother and his lost childhood in Russia.

Next week at the same time, we’ll be presenting Esme by H H Munro (Saki).

Today’s programme is presented by Elrik Merlin. You can listen to the programme now at, or simply click here to start your player, if your browser is configured to do so. Listeners in the United States are encouraged to tune in using this link:
