Jack Flanders and Bill Lizard

Today on the ZBS Radio Hour, at 11am and 7pm Pacific (19:00 and 03:00 GMT), we bring you something rather special as we start two new adventures, including one that will be especially fascinating for listeners with Celtic sensibilities.

We kick off the hour with a new tale from the Fantastic Voyages of Jack Flanders: Tropical Hot Dog NightJack Flanders and his crew sail to Key Milagro, an island that’s often referred to as “Key Diablo!”. A mysterious fog moves in at night, sucking out all the colour, and everything becomes black & white. The next day, no one can recall exactly what happened. The fog returns night after night. The islanders seem normal during the day, but at night they dress up in clothes from the 40s and 50s; slinky dresses, double-breasted suits, fedoras and trench coats. But there is one person who may know exactly what’s going on: his name is Johnny Seven. His bookshop, “Johnny Seven’s Private Eye,” sells only detective/crime/mystery novels and also rents videos of black & white film noir…

Then at the bottom of the hour, we present a new departure for the ZBS Radio Hour where we bring you a show that wasn’t actually made by ZBS! Instead, by special arrangement, it’s a production by the incomparable Roger Gregg and the award-winning Crazy Dog Audio Theatre from Ireland: join us for Part One of Tread Softly, Bill Lizard. When American private-eye Bill Lizard is thrown off his speeding train of thought, he finds himself in a strange land known as the Celtic Imagination. Trapped there, he becomes an unwilling Yankee tourist fumbling through a surreal tapestry of Irish literary parody, social satire and some good ol’ slap-stick. Bill’s traveling companion, Cyril, is a 6 foot Pooka in the shape of a Big Bunny. It’s quite brilliant. This production won the Gold Mark Time Award for Audio Science Fiction Production. And don’t forget, if you like what you hear on the ZBS Radio Hour, get along to ZBS.org where you can buy these marvellous adventures as downloads or on CD.
