Happy Birthday Mozart!

in Daily Programme

by Gabrielle Riel on Friday, 27 January, 2012

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born at 9 Getreidegasse in Salzburg, capital of the sovereign Archbishopric of Salzburg in what is now Austria on the 27th January 1756.

A musical prodigy, he wrote his first concerto at the age of 4, his first symphony at 7, and his first opera at 12. His musical output was enormous, having composed over 600 known works, many acknowledged as the pinnacle of classical composition.

Yet for all his prodigeous output, Mozart’s lifestyle exceeded his income and he died aged 35 and was buried in an unmarked grave in Vienna. His popularity has never wavered and performances of his music have continued for centuries.
