Happy Birthday Benjamin Britten!

Today is the 98th anniver­sary of the birth of famed Eng­lish com­pos­er Ben­jamin Brit­ten.

Brit­ten com­posed his first piece at the age of four­teen, and from that point for­ward his life and career were in music. Brit­ten was pro­lif­ic and he wrote many dif­fer­ent types of pieces, such as opera, solo vocal, cham­ber, orches­tral and film music. He was also a renowned pianist and con­duc­tor.

Today’s pro­gram on Radio Riel’s Main stream fea­tures many of Brit­ten’s works and works from oth­er 20th Cen­tu­ry com­posers with whom he was friends or by whom he was influ­enced through­out his life as a com­pos­er, includ­ing: Gus­tav Holst, Dmitri Shostakovich, Aaron Cop­land and Mstislav Ros­tropovich.
