Grand Opening of Bradburyville

Alliance Library Sys­tem, a pio­neer in the use of vir­tu­al worlds to pro­mote librar­i­an­ship and read­ing, will unveil a unique “walk-in” book dur­ing the grand open­ing of their newest Sec­ond Life project, Brad­buryville. The Grand Open­ing is sched­uled for Sun­day, Oct. 5th from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. SL time, and is part of The Big Read Ini­tia­tive spon­sored by the Nation­al Endow­ment for the Arts. It is open to the pub­lic.

Alliance devel­oped the walk-in book con­cept as a way to fur­ther immerse vis­i­tors into the nov­el Fahren­heit 451, the sem­i­nal work by writer Ray Brad­bury. Vis­i­tors will dress as the books pro­tag­o­nist, lit­er­al­ly walk through the cov­er of a large copy of Fahren­heit 451, then watch and inter­act as scenes from the book appear around them. Nar­ra­tions describes the action and themes of the sto­ry as the scenes change and evolve. Par­tic­i­pants are left with a ques­tion to pon­der regard­ing what book they most val­ue or would choose to pro­tect.

In addi­tion to expe­ri­enc­ing Fahren­heit 451, addi­tion­al events and activ­i­ties will be avail­able dur­ing the grand open­ing. The sched­ule is:

4 p.m. – 6 p.m. – Guid­ed Tours avail­able of Brad­bury ville, with time to expe­ri­ence the walk-in book and oth­er areas of the island

6 p.m. – 7 p.m. – Pro­fes­sor Logs­don of Eure­ka Col­lege will give a lec­ture enti­tled “Brad­bury the Man” — this will be broad­cast live on Radio Riel’s Main Stream at

7 p.m. Music and Social Time; Addi­tion­al tours avail­able — - this will be broad­cast live on Radio Riel’s Main Stream at

All events are open to the pub­lic. Those unable to attend the Grand Open­ing are invit­ed to vis­it Brad­buryville on their own, or to take part in addi­tion­al guid­ed tours avail­able in com­ing weeks. A full sched­ule of tours may be found at the Brad­buryville wel­come area.

In addi­tion to Fahren­heit 451, oth­er Brad­bury nov­els fea­tured on the island include Dan­de­lion Wine, the Mar­t­ian Chron­i­cles, and Some­thing Wicked This Way Comes.
