From the Library: British Folk Expressions

Today on From the Library we’re con­tin­u­ing yes­ter­day’s folk music theme, but expand­ing our view to include the whole of Britain. In an eclec­tic mix from the genre today, we’ll be fea­tur­ing music from all the nom­i­nat­ed artists for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2009 plus all the final­ists for the Young Folk Award 2009.

In addi­tion, we’ll be includ­ing a wide spread of folk music from around these islands, includ­ing some well-known artists – Waterson/Carthy and Chum­bawam­ba for exam­ple – and some less­er-known, such as Mawkin Caus­ley and Mag­pie Lane. And an enor­mous amount more, cov­er­ing the whole gamut of folk music top­ics – from love and loss to pol­i­tics and protest.

Spe­cial thanks today to Saf­fia Wid­der­shins, my col­league on the Meta Makeover TV show, who helped choose a good deal of the mate­r­i­al for today’s pro­gramme, which also includes some artists from her part of the coun­try.
