A Ghostly Entertainment

in Daily Programme, Radio Drama

by Elrik Merlin on Wednesday, 28 December, 2016

Today on Radio Riel as we wind down towards the end of the year – and of the holiday season – we will be featuring a programme of British light and lounge music, along with a series of ghostly tales beginning on every even‐numbered hour, including a series of short stories by Edwardian writer E F Benson.

There is a long tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas, of which Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is an obvious example (though the tradition probably originates with his story The Signalman, written and published in 1866 following his involvement in a train crash the year before that haunted him for years), and the tradition was continued by writers like M R James and E F Benson (1867–1940). Benson’s masterful ghost stories are often set between Christmas and New Year.

Today’s programme is presented by Elrik Merlin. If you are in the United States or Canada, please click here to launch the Stream Licensing player. To listen from outside North America, click here to start your player .
