India — Independence and Remembrance 6–8:30PM SLT

We have three reasons to celebrate the music of India tonight at Monday Night World Music.

First, today (August 15) is India’s Independence Day, the 64th birthday of the world’s largest democracy. Second, after years of dreaming and studying but never planning, I (Carter) have finally booked my very first visit to India. And third — less joyfully — a legendary actor of Hindi movies, Shammi Kapoor, died over the weekend.

Shammi’s movies were always full of joy and vitality, though, and so instead of somber mourning we offer in his memory a raucous celebration of the musical delights his country has to offer. So tune in to hear many styles of great music from India. We’ll hear lots of music from Bollywood (mainstream Hindi movies), with a special focus on some of the songs that Shammi’s shimmy made famous. We’ll hear other Indian pop, jazz, and fusion as well.

Come hang out and enjoy the grooves tonight from 6–8:30PM SLT. You can find us in world at Madhu’s Café Indien, or listen in on Radio Riel’s main stream. Hope to see you there! Indian dress strongly encouraged but entirely optional.
