Relay for Life of Second Life
Saturday, 19 July, 10am SLT to Sunday, 20 July, 10am SLT.
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life began in May 1985 when a colorectal surgeon ran around a track in Tacoma, Washington, for 24 hours, raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society. Today Relay For Life is held in more than 4,600 communities in the United States and in 23 countries across the globe. It has raised more than US$1.5 billion to help the Society accelerate the progress against cancer by saving lives, helping those touched by cancer, and empowering people to fight back against this disease.
The Relay philosophy is: “We are here so that those who face cancer will be supported, that those who have lost their battle will not be forgotten, and so that one day cancer will be eliminated.”
In 2008, Relay For Life has returned to Second Life for a fourth consecutive year. Last year, “RFL of SL” raised more than $118,000 and attracted more than 1,700 participants to this unique virtual walkathon event. Themed ‘Quest For a Cure’, more than 75 volunteer builders lined the virtual track with interactive 3-D displays inspired by action and adventure stories. Avatars encountered opportunities to have fun along the way while raising awareness and raising vital funds. This year the theme is ‘Heroes’.
In the run-up to the Relay itself, Radio Riel, in common with many other people and groups throughout Caledon and Second Life, has been helping to raise money for this worthy cause — and indeed Team Caledon has consistently placed near the top of the list for donations overall. You can still make a donation, either at one of the booths in-world or you can visit this site to make a donation on-line.
Today is the Relay itself and to mark this event, Radio Riel’s Elrik Merlin is presenting a day of music with a focus on moving and uplifting songs, and songs with a message, under the title “You Raise Me Up” – inspired by the Secret Garden song of the same name. We’ll be hearing from them – including the original 2001 recording of the piece, which has since been covered by over 120 other artists – during the course of the day; along with a great many other items from a wide variety of genres, including some you seldom, if ever, hear on Radio Riel.
Join us for a day of moving music on our Main Stream: http://music.radioriel.org — the ideal URL for you to use in your home parcel media address in-world — or simply visit any Caledon Library branch in-world and press Play on your embedded music player. (If you want to listen off-world, eg in Winamp or iTunes, and the above address doesn’t work for you, click here.)
You can attend the Relay in-world by visiting the RFL of SL Sims: http://slurl.com/secondlife/American+Cancer+Society/127/5/23 — and for more details of the day’s events, visit this page.
