the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot.

To mark the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot today’s selection will feature music from the late Renaissance through to the mid 17th century.

Arguably “the only man to enter Parliament with honest intent” in 1605 Guy Fawkes became the face of a conspiracy to remove James the I and VI from the English throne, along with a significant number of the House of Lords. The King’s Ministers were tipped off and Fawkes was caught under Parliament red handed with the powder. Since then “Guy Fawkes night” was celebrated every 5th of November. Although in recent years “Bonfire night” has combined All Hallows bonfires and Guy Fawkes celebrations together.
