Main: The Great American Songbook

Today’s program on Radio Riel’s Main stream is a collection of composers and songs that are often referred to as “The Great American Songbook”.

There actually is no definitive Great American Songbook, instead it is a term used to describe what music historians, critics and performers consider to be the best American songs of the 20th Century. Many of the songs were originally written for Broadway musicals, and in some cases films, by well-known composers such as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Richard Rodgers.

The songs outlived their initial purpose as pieces for musicals when mid-20th Century Jazz musicians began performing and recording them, leading to their extended life as Jazz standards. The program today contains all of the “usual suspects”, as well as some of the lesser-known composers that contributed an occasional piece to the Songbook.
