Today’s programme explores the expansion of Celtic music and themes into several different genres of modern music, and today we are featuring the new album from Secret Sky — along with some solo tracks from one of its members, Caroline Lavelle.
The “Celtic Moods” strand on Radio Riel explores the way in which Celtic themes and music have influenced many other areas of music, from rock to classical, and well beyond the traditional Celtic Lands. You will find a number of traditional tunes in today’s programme, but they may not be arranged quite as you might expect. And yes, there are a few traditional musicians here too – but they are seldom performing traditionally.
Here we are featuring musicians and music that start from the Celtic tradition and take it forward into other realms, from Joanie Madden to Mendelssohn; from thunderously spectacular orchestral arrangements (you’ll hear several of those today) to inspiring music for a small Celtic ensemble and organ, played in the largest Gothic space in the world.
Thus, this is not quite a ‘Celtic’ programme in the normal sense of the word. Today instead revel in the lush orchestrations of Erich Kunzel and Phil Coulter, for example; listen to Celtic Thunder and Celtic Woman; and enjoy a collection of exactly what it says on the tin: Celtic Moods.
Then join us at 11am or 7pm Pacific (19:00 or 03:00 in the UK) for the latest episode of our classic radio drama series, Moon Over Morocco, as the story reaches its climax.
