An English Folk Festival

Today on Radio Riel we present a diverse collection of English folk music, from the 60s to the past decade.

You’ll hear artists like Kirsty MacColl, Bellowhead, The Unthanks, Magpie Lane, Chumbawamba, Pentangle (pictured above in 2007)  and many more, and in particular we are featuring the work of Vashti Bunyan.

Vashti BunyanVashti Bunyan is an English singer-songwriter who hails from Newcastle in the NE of England. She released her debut album, Just Another Diamond Day in 1970. The album sold very few copies, and Bunyan, discouraged, abandoned her musical career. By 2000, her album had acquired a cult following; it was re-released and Bunyan recorded more songs, initiating the second phase of her musical career after a gap of thirty years. She released the album Lookaftering in 2005. We can count her first two albums as falling fairly well into the folk spectrum: her forthcoming album Heartleap, released in October, probably does not. It’s almost completely self-performed and makes extensive use of electronic instruments. Listen out for it!
