Late last week we heard of the death of a great musician and songwriter, Peter Skellern. He was responsible for some magnificent pieces of music — many will recall his early 1970s hit, You’re A Lady for example, with its expansive arrangement including brass band and choir. He also specialised in marvellous renditions of classic period songs.
To celebrate his life, we are featuring a selection of his songs taken from several of his albums. In addition we have a very special tribute to Skellern recorded by our friend Mike Brown, a presenter on CHBN Radio in Truro, Cornwall — not far from Skellern’s home in Fowey. Mike presents the story of Peter Skellern’s life in music and he plays several of his songs — including material from his band Oasis with Julian Lloyd-Webber, Mitch Dalton and Mary Hopkin. We are most grateful to Mike and to CHBN for making this programme available. It runs for about 30 minutes and will be broadcast at 11am and 7pm Pacific Time (19:00 and 03:00 in the UK).
The rest of today’s programme features the Great American Songbook and other songs of the inter- and post-war period, featuring songs from writers including Gershwin, Arlen, Berlin, Kern, Carmichael, Porter and many more, several of whose songs were recorded by Peter Skellern.
