Today on Radio Riel as we wind down towards the end of the year – and of the holiday season – we will be featuring a programme of British light and lounge music, along with a series of ghostly tales beginning on every even-numbered hour, including a series of short stories by Edwardian writer E F Benson.
There is a long tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas, of which Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is an obvious example (though the tradition probably originates with his story The Signalman, written and published in 1866 following his involvement in a train crash the year before that haunted him for years), and the tradition was continued by writers like M R James and E F Benson (1867–1940). Benson’s masterful ghost stories are often set between Christmas and New Year.
